Sample questions with answers

Open your code book, pick an answer, then reveal the explanation. Explanations cite article numbers only.

  1. Question 1 · NEC Knowledge

The portion of a grounding electrode conductor that is the sole connection to a rod, pipe, or plate electrode is not required to be larger than:

    • A.8 AWG copper
    • B.6 AWG copper
    • C.4 AWG copper
    • D.2 AWG copper
    Show answer

Answer: B. Section 250.66(A) caps the grounding electrode conductor to a rod, pipe or plate electrode at 6 AWG copper (or 4 AWG aluminum) when that conductor connects to nothing but the rod/pipe/plate. Larger service conductors do not force a larger conductor to these electrodes.

    See 250.66(A)

  2. Question 2 · NEC Knowledge

The total of all bends in a run of EMT between pull points shall not exceed:

    • A.180 degrees
    • B.270 degrees
    • C.360 degrees
    • D.450 degrees
    Show answer

Answer: C. Article 358 limits the bends between pull points (boxes, conduit bodies, etc.) to 360 degrees total, counting every offset and kick. The same limit appears in most raceway articles, so one answer covers EMT, RMC, PVC and others.

    See 358.26

  3. Question 3 · NEC Knowledge

A 15- or 20-ampere, 125-volt receptacle is installed outdoors in a wet location. Its enclosure must be weatherproof:

    • A.Only while the cover is closed
    • B.Whether or not an attachment plug cap is inserted
    • C.Only when the receptacle is not in use
    • D.Not required if the receptacle is GFCI protected
    Show answer

Answer: B. Section 406.9(B)(1) requires an enclosure that is weatherproof whether or not the plug is inserted for 15- and 20-ampere, 125- and 250-volt receptacles in wet locations; this is the 'in-use' (bubble) cover requirement. GFCI protection is a separate requirement and does not substitute for the enclosure.

    See 406.9(B)(1)

  4. Question 4 · NEC Knowledge

What is the maximum percentage of a conduit's cross-sectional area that may be filled when it contains three or more conductors?

    • A.31%
    • B.40%
    • C.53%
    • D.60%
    Show answer

Answer: B. Chapter 9, Table 1 sets fill by conductor count: one conductor, two conductors, and over two conductors each have their own maximum, and the over-two case is 40 percent. The Table 4 columns you use for raceway sizing are pre-computed from these percentages.

    See Chapter 9, Table 1, Chapter 9, Table 4

  5. Question 5 · Calculations

A 240-volt, single-phase resistive heater is rated 7,200 watts. What current does it draw?

    • A.15 A
    • B.30 A
    • C.45 A
    • D.60 A
    Show answer

    Answer: B. For a single-phase resistive load, I = P ÷ V = 7,200 ÷ 240 = 30 A. There is no power factor or √3 term for a single-phase resistive load.

Questions people ask

Is the Texas Journeyman Electrician exam open book?
Yes. PSI lets you bring the NEC 2026 code book into the exam, so knowing where to find an answer quickly matters as much as knowing the answer.
How many questions are on the exam?
NEC Knowledge: 59 questions in 130 minutes. Calculations: 26 questions in 110 minutes. Each part is scored separately and you need 70% on both.
Which code edition does the exam use?
Our questions and explanations are written to NEC 2026, the edition TDLR lists for current exams. Check your candidate bulletin from PSI before test day.
Are these real exam questions?
No. Every question is original and written from the published exam content outline. Real PSI items are confidential, and memorising leaked items is not how people pass an open-book exam.
What does the free practice test show me?
Your score on each exam part and each blueprint area, plus the article numbers to study for every question you miss. No account is needed.
